The Teacher Education Centre is situated on what was once a consecrated graveyard opposite Seale's Corner on Market Street in Jamestown. Many of the gravestones have been relocated to the front of St James' Church. |

Prior to being the Teacher Education Centre, the building was purpose built as an infant school in 1960 to accommodate the infants who were previously taught in the building, which is now the Jamestown Community Centre. The first Headteacher was Mrs Una Thomas and Governor Sir Robert Alford and Mrs Alford officially opened the school in January 1961. At the time the editor of "The Wirebird" commented that the school was 'well designed with strong emphasis on light. The infant school has the attraction of a paddling pool.' |

Originally, teacher training took place at The Canister, where Bernista's Tailoring is presently situated. It was then moved to the old Secondary Selective School (Ladder Hill) after the opening of the Prince Andrew School. At the introduction of the three-tier system, Jamestown Infant School was converted into the Teacher Education Centre. Mrs Margaret Stimson officially opened the building on 30 September 1989. Mrs Lillian Crowie was then the Education Officer. On Mrs Crowie's retirement Mrs Elizabeth (Betty) Joshua was appointed. She later became Headteacher of Two Boats School on Ascension Island and Mrs Corinda Essex became Education Officer. The current holder of the post, Mrs Barbara Plato, took over the position from the previous holder, Priscilla Thomas in 2003. |
