| The Public Library in Jamestown is said to be the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere. It has been serving the island population since 1813. It is situated between the Castle Gardens and the Police Headquarters facing the Grand Parade, St James Church and the Doctor Arnold monument. In 1973, two members of the St Helena Legislative Council attended a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in Jersey. As a direct result of their efforts the Jersey Aid Project gave St Helena a Mobile Library Vehicle. The Mobile Library visits some rural areas. |
