Initial Teacher TrainingLocal RecruitmentTeacher shortage remains a problem for the Education Department as employees leave their jobs for offshore employment, or to work elsewhere on the Island. Pamela Lawrence, Chief Education Officer said that while the Department is not advertising for teachers on a daily basis, they would employ suitably qualified people immediately, particularly those with the relevant teaching experience as there are a number of teacher vacancies to be filled. Expressions of interest or enquiries about available positions should be addressed in the first instance to the Chief Education Officer at the Education Department. Support Teacher SchemeThe Support Teacher Scheme allows for teachers from overseas to work within the education system on St Helena. Support Teachers are employed on a two year contract and work alongside local teachers in both the primary and secondary sectors. Teachers are selected to support subjects within the curriculum where either a specific development need or a shortage of local staff has been identified. Following its conception in 2000 the funding for the scheme was extended by the Department for International Development (DfID) for a further two years in 2002. At present (2005) there are six Support Teachers working within the scheme. Expressions of interest in the scheme are always welcome and should be addressed in the first instance to the Chief Education Officer at the Education Department.
