Education policy on St Helena is the responsibility of the Education Committee. This is made up of a number of Legislative Council members and senior representatives of the Education Department.

Implementation of education policy and day to day management of education is carried out by the Education Department.

 

The Department is headed by the Chief Education Officer(CEO), Ms Pamela Lawrence B.Ed (Hons). The CEO in liaison with the Education Commitee is responsible for setting education policy on St Helena. Additionally the CEO has overall responsibility for the management of the five education divisions including standards, budget, resources and development. The CEO's office is located in the Department's administrative building, The Canister, in Jamestown.

  

 

The Primary Sector is headed by Education Officer (EOP), Mrs Lilla Yon M.Ed.(left)  EOP is responsible for first and middle school education. Currently Mrs Marilyn Joshua (right)is acting EOP.

  

 

Mr Derek Henry, is Headteacher of Prince Andrew School and Education Officer (EO) for the Secondary Sector. Derek has responsibility for administration, finance and resources at Prince Andrew School and for the design and implementation of school policies and systems. 

  

The Education Officer for the Teacher Training Sector, which includes the library services, is Mrs Barbara Plato.

 

The administrative function of the Education Department is carried out by the team at The Canister.

Assistant Secretary (AS), Mrs Carol Thompson, manages the administative section of the Education Department. The role involves: liaison with the education officers and headteachers; provision of administrative support for the Public Library; provision of management information for the CEO and monitoring the department's annual budget. Carol is also the Secretary for the Scholarship Awards Committee.

 

 

Rosalie Lawrence is an Executive Officer (ExO) in the Department and has principal supervisory responsibilities for: clerical activities; liaison with the schools' transport provider. Rosalie is the Secretary for the Education Committee.
